Country Comfort

From Rosemary Wilkinson's book, Quick Quilts to Make in a Weekend came Country Comfort, a nice utility quilt perfect for big stitch quilting and homespun fabric.

What I like best about Country Comfort is the big flower template used for quilting.  And, what makes it interesting is you center it over the seam of two joining blocks, instead of in the middle of each block.  Now, it was pieced together in a weekend, but hand quilting it will be a whole other weekend or two.

Every fall, as the weather starts to turn I think about crocheting again, but never do. Well, this year out came my crochet books and a few balls of yarn to practice with. I started at the beginning, reviewed all the basic stitches and was surprised how much I remembered.

Deciding what to crochet is proving to be difficult, as I would like to use up the odd balls of yarn I have around the house first.  How easy it would be to just pick a pattern and head off to the yarn shop, but I'll try not to do that.

In the meantime, I have been happily working on one of my Hocuspocusville stitchery blocks and joining together my Shades of Autumn, POTC blocks, which is looking pretty good, but very slow going.  So, it looks like my fall project will continue right into winter, if need be, to finish it.

Until next time.....happy quilting!

Karen

You could always use the shell stitch and make a nice little lap throw - or even a pillow top depending on how much yarn you have.

I always find the thing I spend the most time on is deciding what pattern or fabric to use for something....today I spent hours deciding on the kind of handle to put on a tote bag! Will you be using the flower template for the Utility Quilt? Like you, I have not crocheted in years but I always remember loving it.....Yes....use your yarn and create something fun!

Hello Karen - you might get this twice - not sure that it posted the first time. Love your utility quilt - I have a stast of tweeds in a cupboard waiting for a similar project. I have not done any crochet for years but I think it is a bit like riding a bike - one you know how you never forget. I look forward to your next post.

If you're looking for some crochet inspiration, check out a blog called Attic 24. She has a wonderful sense of colour, and also some great tutorials. Your homespun quilt is going to look great with the big stitch quilting. Looking forward to seeing it finished.

Love the plaids! I'm thinking that might become a winter project for me, too, because I've been thinking a lot about hand quilting lately. =)

Crochet can be scrappy, too. One of my favorite patterns is simply alternating a sc and a dc. Kind of looks like a popcorn stitch. I've done it all my life, since I made my first baby afghan from a pattern. Just chain an odd number of stitches and off you go. It looks great in rows of different colors, starts and stops all over the place.

I like the country comfort quilt that you made and the simple quilting suits it just fine. Hand quilting is quite rewarding.
Your crocheting looks like fun and using up the balls of yarn around the house means that you can go to the yarn shop later ;-)
Enjoy your weekend,
Judy

What a lovely quilt and the way you use the template looks super! I love homespun fabric.
I believe that once you can crochet and knitting, you remember always how to do it. The colours are lovely, nearly the same as that warm colours of those beautiful blocks!
Happy quilting (and crochetting), Cisca

Love your Country Comfort, and the flower template will be perfect for the top. Looking forward seeing this all quilted.
Just use your yarn and start small, I'm sure you will love it. Crocheting hexagons are fun to do and so handy to have in your bag and grab when ever you have to wait or just in front of TV.

Your POTC blocks are so beautiful.

Love your homespun quilt on the cool rocking chair. And your POTC blocks are just beautiful. Good work as always, Karen. Hope you have had a Happy Halloween. Very, very quiet here at my house. Never have any tricks or treaters in our little out of the way area. And it's all older folks so no neighborhood kiddies. Used to love having the kids come begging. Take care!! Carol

Country Comfort looks great and the hand quilting will just be perfect on the homespun.
I can't crochet but when I want to use left overs I knit some dishcloths. Crochet dishcloth free patterns are on the internet.

Country Comfort looks right at home on the chair. I like the big flower motif you'll be hand quilting soon. The colors of yarn look like they go well with your Shades of Autummn quilt. I love to knit or crochet while watching TV...to bad those computer games are so hard to put down!
