free-form test quilt

Never would I have thought, back when I started quilting, that one day I would make an Art Quilt, well, never say never I say!  It is so different from traditional quilt making that a whole new way of thinking is required, you almost feel naughty for trying it!

On a scale from one to ten, I'm not sure how my free-form test quilt would rate, but it was fun to make and something I would like to explore.  So, to get the creative juices flowing, I am going to follow Gwen Marston's lead and begin a series of what she calls Sketches or Small Studies.

This doesn't mean my traditional quilt making days are over, just a nice change when the mood strikes me and it will help keep the dust off my sewing machine.

Until next time.....happy quilting!

Karen

Wow! It looks fabulous! I would have never thought this is your first improv quilt. You definitely made it like a pro!
I smiled when I read you felt almost naughty while making this quilt. I had never heard that expression before! Isn't it fun not following rules?

Karen, I think the creative process should not be restricted to only one thing if the "creator" wishes to do something different.......Your quilt is outstanding.....look forward to seeing more of your work......

Hi Karen...sometimes we are just naturals, I am sure all the judges are giving you a current 10! It looks incredible, your values and eye for art is amazing but I am not surprised.
What a wonderful journey you have started, can`t wait to see your next art project

Fantastic colours. Great job choosing that combination. Did you have help?

Awesome quilt! I think it takes guts to let go of the preciseness of traditional quilting and go for the free form process. Rock on!

Karen I like your new block. This is so totally different from what we see on you blog, and I do like it so much. I think it is good to try a different thing. I even ordered Gwen's book and I'm now reading it with great interest.
Looking forward seeing your next block.
