Civil War Bride Block One

One down, nineteen to go!
What a great block to stitch. I love the irregularity of the pattern. It makes it more real.
I've been wondering what the two brown objects are at the top of the block. I did them in a similar colour to the original pattern and have ruled out it being foliage, as all foliage in the original quilt was done with the same green fabric. So, what else can it be? Could it be bird's nose diving? This quilt has lots of birds in it.

Until next week.....happy quilting!

  5. Your applique is just beautiful!! I am not sure what those brown pieces are. But you are right, they do look like birds taking a nose dive.

  6. I bet they are trees in the background. (Winter trees) Or maybe floating bird feathers! :0)

  7. It is a different and charming block for sure. You know, it almost reminds me of when we were kids in school and we would put a small dabble of paint on a sheet of paper, fold it in half and open it up....mirror images and no telling what you make of it. This is a good compliment...don't get me wrong!

  8. Oh Karen, I must say, this block surely grabbed my attention. Immediately. I had to come and see and say oooh and ahhh!

As for what we're seeing in the brown area, I tend to see a fruit of some kind. I thought of my grandmothers Fig tree.

Excellent choice of fabrics, too. Yummy!

  11. So pretty, Karen - your applique is the best. What are those little brown things? Kind of looks like a pair of hands ready to embrace the bouquet. Very skinny arms, though! Love your fabrics. Carol

  21. Great block Karen and fabulous colours, if you go to the August posts (one of mine) there is a lady called Denise who sent me photo's of her block, they are definitely birds. She was making her own patterns from the pictures of the original top. Such an interesting quilt this one!

  22. Ok, it's going to sound weird, but I think the brown things are designs on the wallpaper in the background of the vase.

Why would birds be diving into a flower arrangement?

See, I told you it was going to sound weird.

  23. I think they are just leaves...what a lovely block.

  24. I think the brown shapes are birds. The same shapes are repeated in other blocks and the original quilter embroidered eyes on the shapes. The twin bird block next to the table in the original has one of these shapes and I think the weird bird in the cat/dog/rooster/hen block is the same creature but on its feet and in profile. What it is I don't know. The original artist was drawing animals that did not live in her neighborhood except in a traveling circus but she differentiated the leaves nicely from apple, to chestnut, to rose so I think she was being as accurate as she could be in her portrayal.
